so it begins...

THE TIME HAS FINALLY COME. after the most protracted, scrutinized and expensive campaign in american history, the american people head to the polls (well, those who haven't already cast an early ballot). all major surveys have obama well ahead, leading in all but two key battleground states ('god bless' n. carolina and indiana). the next 24 (48, 72...?) hours promise to be an overly dramatic, contentious, contemptible affair. as johann hari assuredly asks:

"Can it happen? Are the Bush years going to end with the election of a cerebral, liberal black man born to a Muslim goat-herd from Kenya and an atheist farm-girl from Kansas? Whisper it: yes we can. At the midnight hour tomorrow night - unless opinion polls are wrong; more wrong than they have ever been - the era of President Barack Obama will begin."

...the real question is, what sort of political attitudes and policy changes will define this new era? will ordinary americans press for the "change" so anxiously sought? more election coverage and commentary:
