malaysia's internal security act...

on friday, three malaysian citizens were detained under the internal security act. one was later released. enacted over five decades ago, the ISA was originally designed to deal with the threat of communism and armed struggle. it was not intended to target journalists or politicians who expressed disagreement with the ruling party. on those occasions, other legal means are commonly pursued (such as sedition laws or libel/defamation suits). in the wake of the arrests, several government ministers and opposition members have spoken out against the 'misapplication' of the law, with some calling for its immediate review. below is an investigative piece recently aired by al jazeera that looks at the ISA:
